Pensions Set to Rise BBC news September 8, 2003 Single pensioners in
Guernsey could be £9 a week better off, if the States approve. The
Social Security Authority (SSA) is asking politicians to agree to a 7.4%
rise on a top rate of £121 a week. Married
pensioner couples would see an increase of £9.50 a week to £200. This
is the second year in which the authority has recommended putting nearly
all the increase on the single pension rate. The
move is designed to make the single pension a higher proportion of the
married couples' rate, in line with the recommendations from the Townsend
Centre's poverty report. SSA
President, Deputy Owen le Tissier, said the cost of living for a single
person had made the increase very important because the cost of living for
a single person was almost the same as for a married couple. Couples
on supplementary benefit could also see their income rise by 5% to just
over £170 per week. The authority is also recommending prescription charges increase by 10p, to £2.30 per item. The new rates will apply from 1 January. Copyright
