The Fire in HaiNing Exposed a Blind Area in Caring for the Mental Health of Rural Elders.

The fire in WuFeng Village , Huang Wan Town , HaiNing , ZheJiang Province killed 40 persons. The fire, known as the Feb 15^th fire, occurred in a grass (straw) temple. According to the article, older women often think that they have completed their main task in life when their children have grown up. They devote the remainder of their life praying for repentance for past mistakes, crowding in large numbers into grass temples at least seven times per year. The People’s Daily News said, “the middle-aged and elder women in the rural areas are supporters of the grass temple, which brings up a question: who will take care of the mental health of rural elders?” The writer urges the government to come up with programs that engage older women in their present life and its possibilities for the future rather than think only of the past.

浙江海寧黃灣鎮五豐村一座“草廟”發生的“2•15”特大火災奪去40人的生命。人民日報的報道說，農村中老年女性是“草廟”不倒的支撐者，它使我們思考：誰來關心農村老年人的精神生活呢？！

發生火災事故的草棚準確地講是一座“草廟”。草棚所在位置原是當地“記家廟”舊址。該廟經歷三建三拆，曾經嚴管。2003年6月，由當地3名中老年女性村民發起，在原址上重新違章搭起3間草棚。據悉，草棚搭建以來，當地村民已在此進行了六七次名為“普堂懺”的迷信活動。

從火災中僥幸逃生的五豐村孫大娘心有余悸地說，草棚裡群體性“普堂懺”活動已搞過多次。在發生這次事故的前一天還進行了一整天，一直沒有人阻止過。

然而，“草廟”距鄉黨委、政府大院僅三五百米之遙，卻成工作盲區。面對省政府負責同志和記者的責問，鄉村兩級幹部的回答如出一轍：“沒看到”、“不知道”。

報道說，時下正值幹燥春季，對於這樣大規模的村民集聚活動，有關鎮村領導幹部視而不見，更沒有防患於未然，因此，一旦災難發生，便失去了應急調控和處置能力。

報道亦說，此次特大火災事故揭開農村迷信活動的冰山一角，且反映出農村基層黨組織和政權組織建設存在的薄弱環節。農村非法迷信活動，不僅僅在海寧五豐村存在；隻靠簡單的取締、整頓難以奏效，還須加大引導力度。

在2月16日上午召開的浙江省委常委擴大會上，有省委常委一針見血地指出：“基礎不牢，地動山搖；一些地方基層組織建設亟待加強。”

報道認為，“記家廟”的反反復復說明：農村非法迷信活動僅靠簡單取締、整頓，是難以奏效的，還必須加大引導力度。農村中老年女性是“草廟”不倒的支撐者，它使我們思考：誰來關心農村老年人的精神生活呢？！

南京大學社會學系教授朱力分析說：“農村很多老婦人相夫教子使命完成了，也沒有特別的愛好，閒暇時間多了，沒有辦法打發日子，孤獨感不斷累積，孤單中她們會去尋求寄托……全社會尤其是政府部門要從這件事情得到啟發，正確引導，真正地關心老年人！”
