Premier's Office Honours the Elderly By Asanda Nini BuaNews(Pretoria), September 10, 2003 A fun-day for the elderly was held at
the OR Tambo hall in Zwelitsha on September 9th to restore their
sense of belonging in the community. Assistant Communications Director in
the Premier's office, Lynnete Skriker, said the aim of the event was to
pay tribute to the lives of the elderly and facilitate their full
participation in their communities. 'We are heeding the call to respect the
human rights of elderly persons and to restore their dignity,' said Ms
Skriker. She said the function, which was
attended by Buffalo City Mayor Sindisile Maclean, started at 11am with a
fun walk from the Zwelitsha Zone 1 Taxi Rank, past the police station and
end at the OR Tambo hall. The rest of the day's festivities
included a competition for the best dancers, dramatists and storytellers
amongst the elderly participants. There have also been a session whereby
elderly couples who had been married for more than 45 years have been on
hand to give advice on the secrets of a lasting marriage. Prizes for the best efforts were
awarded at the end of the event. 'We call on everybody to come and pay homage to our elders when they enjoy their day,' said Skriker. Copyright © 2002 Global
