AGEING OF HANDICAPPED PEOPLE

April 8, 2002

At this round table, the speakers and participants reached an extensive consensus about a key issue: the social integration of the handicapped.

Handicapped people, specially the elderly ones, can live in their usual environment, with they are familiar.

The Social and family integration is important. It facilitates the learning of the handicapped, the key issue they should never give up to without paying attention to their age. On the other hand, the rest of the members of the society learn that there are different people who can give them unexpected values. The discussion centered on the double vision about the handicapped people and ageing: there is a serious problem on the part of the elderly who, because of their age, begin to face handicaps.

Panelists asked about training programs of the health staff and social workers with handicapped persons. Panelists said that such professionals must have a combination of competence, knowledge and a special positive attitude towards the handicapped.
