The Spanish Red Cross presented yesterday the advantages of t h e i r t e l e –assistance service through a telematic terminal specially made for the elderly. This mechanism could be activated in case of emergency or only if they want to talk to someone. It is about a social, preventive and assistance service in which personal attention is paid to the elderly who wants to facilitate their independence, and at the same time it enlarges considerably the time this person can be living alone in his/her own environment. Some accessory devices, such as volume-measure detectors for falls and situations of domestic danger ( fires, shortcircuits ..) the voice activators of danger or the registers of abnormal movements were shown. The last ones are thought helpful for the elderly with mental problems.

According to data from the Red Cross, the leader in this service has 82% of the present users in Spain. The function of alarms to call for help were only of a 20% of the total, and out of them 4% were medical emergencies, the majority of the calls looked for a little chat or a consultation, which this service of tele-assistance also offers the elderly.
