Rural Isolation for Many Elderly

BBC News

February 19, 2006

Problems facing older people living in isolation in rural parts of Cumbria are to be addressed at a conference.

The event, to be held in Penrith later this month, is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and organised by Age Concern.

It will bring together experts from groups working with older people to examine ways to end social exclusion.

They will discuss government research and look at examples of local projects and ideas from other regions.

The conference, "Stepping Stones to Social Inclusion", will take place at the Newton Rigg Campus, Penrith, on 28 February.

Ron Munby, chair of Age Concern Cumbria, said: "All partners, including the voluntary and community sector, need to gain an understanding as to how we can work together in Cumbria to deliver cost-effective provision in rural localities, presenting a more joined up approach from commissioners, funders and providers."
