Ella Jenkins, a Lifetime Achievement

by Claire Laganne

February 5, 2004

Ella Jenkins, a great friend of Global Action on Aging, will receive a Grammy Award on February 8, 2004, to honor her Lifetime Achievement.

Born in August 1924 in Saint Louis, Ella Jenkins became a professional singer in 1956, and released “Call and Response: Rhythmic Group Singing,” in 1957.  Immediately popular, she became increasingly involved in teaching children’s music drawn from all over the world. She helped young people understand songs and interested them in other languages, harmonies, and cultures.

Ella Jenkins has vigorously promoted elder women’s rights. In 1998 Global Action on Aging invited her to present a participatory music program to international delegates who drew up the  “Declaration of Older Women’s Rights” that helped define this important issue during the UN’s 1999 International Year of Older Persons.  Without doubt, Ella Jenkins can claim a lifetime achievement for “building a society for all ages.”
