Couple Accused of Exploiting Elderly Woman Arrested

By Deb Hass, WCPO

July 24, 2006

The suspects wanted for allegedly stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from an elderly northern Kentucky woman are in the Kenton County Jail Monday night, each held on $100,000 bond.

Ft. Wright police say that Gordon and Brandie Powell lived a life of luxury while confining the 85-year-old woman to an 8-by-8 room in the basement on Hazelwood without medication or proper care. In fact, all she had was a medical bed, TV and a chair.

Police say Gordon Powell coerced the elderly woman, who suffers from dementia, into giving him "power of attorney" over her affairs after befriending her a few years ago when they were neighbors in Ludlow.

The two are alleged to have sold her farm and other property to buy and renovate a house complete with a jacuzzi and plasma television.

When police executed a search warrant at their home on Hazelwood last week, they say the Powell's allowed the elderly woman upstairs, but police say it was just for show.

The elderly woman is now in the care of adult protective services.
The Powells faced a Kenton County judge Monday morning on felony charges of adult exploitation and abuse.

They're now in the Kenton County Jail, each held on $100,000 bond, and if convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison.
