In Focus:
Unions and Retirees

GAA presents New York City Unions with outstanding
retiree programs.

CWA Local 1180

Retiree Program

Who They are

Local 1180 is an affiliate of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) located in New York City. They represent more than 8,000 workers. Most of their members work for the City of New York, in dozens of Mayoral agencies and at the Health and Hospitals Corporation. Local 1180 also represents workers at the Board of Education, the Housing Authority, the Transit Authority, the School Construction Authority, the state's Unified Court System; at private companies such as the Jacob Javits Convention Center; and at not-for-profit organizations including Planned Parenthood of New York City, the ASPCA, Human Rights First, and Human Rights Watch.

Their Retiree Program

Local 1180 invites all 1180 retirees to participate in the many programs of its Retiree Division. The Retiree Division is located at 97 Hudson Street in lower Manhattan, right around the corner from the 1180 office at 6 Harrison Street.

A benefit for the physical and emotional health of retirees

The Retiree Division is a benefit provided through the Local 1180 Retiree Benefits Fund. It was created in 1996 to help promote the physical and emotional health of retirees through the provision of services, creative activities and social events. It proved an instant success and has become not only a regular part of hundreds of 1180 retirees' lives, but also a living testament to how vital retirees are in the life of the union.

“We do it all”

That's the slogan of the Retiree Division, and once you see their calendar of activities, you will agree. The Retiree Division offers classes, workshops, benefits and health information, clubs and other activities. They have a lending library. They provide appointments with the CWA health advocate and pension counselor. Whether it's yoga classes or legal advice you want, you can turn to the Retiree Division to get it. Learn the Internet, or French, or study African-American literature; get information on nutrition or managing your finances; join them for theater trips or excursions and tours.

For Local 1180 retirees who have left the Big Apple for the warmer climate of Florida, they hold an annual Florida retirees conference (see Gallery below).

Contact them

CWA Retirees can reach the Retiree Division at 212-226-5800, or by calling from outside New York City, 800-801-2882. The division sends regular mailings about its programs to all 1180 retirees, but retirees can always call for the latest news or with questions.
