Lincoln Center Institute presented its Imagination Award to Millennium Art Academy of the Bronx this year for its innovative teaching and learning programs which use the arts to encourage students to inquire and seek deeper understanding about the human experience. Millennium is one of several small schools that function autonomously inside Stevenson HS, in the Soundview section of the Bronx. Highlighted in LCI’s review of Millennium’s curriculum is its intergenerational program that pairs students with elder mentors. They meet once a week for two hours and work to eradicate stereotypes of each other’s generation. The students learn to face the challenges of adversity by creating books and plays about the life experiences of the elders, who are often from different religious, ethnic or cultural backgrounds. Their interaction is “transformative,” said Principal Maxine Nodel, a veteran teacher who is dedicated to helping kids who are considered at risk. Now in its third year, the Imagination Award includes a $5,000 grant, plus scholarships for teachers to attend LCI’s National Educator Workshop held annually in July. Award applicants are reviewed by a panel of arts education luminaries from outside the school system.
