Many Elderly Still in the Dark

by Tom Powell

WREG, TN July 27, 2003

Memphis, TN - Another huge concern during this time of crisis? The elderly. Groups running shelters like the one in Hickory Hill expect to see more hot Memphians over the next few days, but you don't have to run a shelter in order to help.

Most of you are busy cleaning up from the storm, so it might be easy to forget about your most vulnerable neighbors. 75 year old Charlie Capece lets his younger relatives do the work. That's smart, especially in this heat. "I had a broken hip. I'm on a walker, sitting out here in the cool," he says. He's learned to be patient over the years. But it's time. He's ready for the AC to kick back in. "Last night was the hottest night. No breeze, nothing. Usually we get a little breeze. Last night, nothing.," he says.

70 year old Dorothy Mitchell is also still in the dark, but that's not her only problem. "See the tree's on my house," she says. She's been through tough times before, even had a stroke a few years back. Now she has her fingers crossed the lights will come on .... soon. "Oh, Ii'll be glad when it does come back on," she says. It's tough to deal with health problems and the heat, but both Dorothy and Charlie say they're lucky. Their relatives and neighbors make sure to check in on them... Even in the middle of all this work.
