Aging : How the Bone is connected to the Teeth

By: John O'Neil
New York Times, November 6, 2001

Calcium supplements can help older people hang on to their teeth as well as keep their hips strong, according to a study published late last month in The American Journal of Medicine.

The study followed 145 healthy people over the age of 65 who were being given calcium supplements and vitamin D as part of a research project on bone loss in the hip.

The subjects took the supplements for three years and were then examined two years later.

At that time, 13 percent of the people who had been given the extra calcium had lost one tooth or more — compared with 24 percent of those who had not taken the calcium.
