  The Global Embrace 2002

By: WHO
May 29, 2002

“Active Ageing: Moving hearts for health “

We are writing to inform you about WHO’s annual intergenerational walk event.  The Global Embrace is the annual advocacy activity of  WHO’s Global Movement for Active Ageing which takes place entirely at the local level in many different locations around the world.  The first Global Embrace took place in 1999, marking the International Year of Older Persons.  Since then, the Global Embrace has been a successful annual event in more than 70 countries where more than 1 million people walked each year on a designated day.  The Global Embrace always takes place on or around the International Day of Older Persons (1 October) to emphasize the importance of intergenerational solidarity and that ageing is a reason for celebration. Healthy older people are a resource for their families, communities and the economy.

The fourth annual Global Embrace will take place on Sunday, 29 September, 2002.

This year the event will highlight the benefits of physical activity linking it to WHO’s theme for World Health Day 2002 with the slogan “Move for health”.  Physical  activity is a common language for all people and a healthsaver, because it has the potential to correct the damage caused by physical inactivity and  more than half of the world’s population is insufficiently active.

The Global Embrace 2002 will take place in collaboration with the World Heart Federation

We are pleased to inform you that we are sharing the celebration of this special day with the World Heart Federation which celebrates “World Heart Day” on  29 September.  The benefits of maintaining cardiovascular health by remaining physically active are well established and our respective messages are in perfect harmony. The World Heart Federation is a non-governmental organization that promotes the study, prevention and care of cardiovascular diseases throughout the world. WHF membership is made up of 165 societies of cardiology and heart foundations in more than 95 countries.
